Marmora woman latest winner of area MPs essay contest

The Member of Parliament for Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga wants to hear why you are proud to be a Canadian – and you just might win a Canadian flag.

Shelby Kramp-Neuman and her staff recently created the Let’s Celebrate Canada essay contest. The MP said it is easy to get caught up in negativity in today’s world, and she and her team wanted to do something to celebrate Canada.

“We think it’s a contest where we can show some pride in our country. I am trying to learn from people in our community what it means to them to be Canadian.”

The contest coincides with the 160th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, and she said a flag is a simple way to help people proudly display the maple leaf.

“We have so much to be thankful for.”

Doreen Wallis is the latest winner of a flag with a patriotic submission touching on when her parents immigrated from England.

“My father was so very proud to be in Canada. He would tell me how he was a lucky man. My father was a huge volunteer in my hometown. He felt it was very important to give back to our wonderful country and community. He embraced Canada and taught us to do the same.”

Wallis added she recently moved back after residing in Texas for 25 years.

“The last couple of years, I felt such a pull to come home. So, I did. I love my country. Now it’s time to help her.”

Kramp-Neuman explained the response has been overwhelming with dozens of entries. Her hope is people will remember what it means to be Canadian.

“It is a small but meaningful way to encourage our constituents to rally and show our true Canadian spirit. We’ve heard from people who have immigrated from countries across the world, people who have been born and raised in the riding and some who have moved here from urban centres.”

Those entering the competition must reside in the riding. It is open to all ages, only one winning entry per household, and entering the contest confirms your consent to be published, as well as sharing your likeness on the MP’s social media platforms.

You can enter the contest at https://shelbykrampneumanmp.ca/…/30/canada-flag-contest/. Submissions should be 100 words or less.
