A new beginning for a local garden has led to a big honour.
Bancroft Horticultural Society won the Garden Ontario District 3 achievement award for the revitalization of the Millennium Park Garden.
“It was a very special evening for our members,” said BHS member Elaine Visser.
The local horticultural society originally installed the garden in 2000.
Visser said the society took on the challenge of giving it a new beginning.
“And once again, it became a true community effort,” she said.
BHS set aside funds and received a grant from Garden Ontario. More than $2,500 was raised last year toward the addition of a central bench. Donations arrived from community members and local businesses, and local contractors and suppliers provided materials and services at cost.
Visser said the project is a “beautiful, accessible garden”, which includes locally sourced stone, trees, shrubs, perennials and native pollinators. A circular bench is at the centre, surrounding a newly-planted Crimson King maple.
The bench seats a dozen people and provides visitors with a 360-degree garden view.
The Town of Bancroft will display the award in its public showcase until next May.
