Hastings County ‘deeply saddened’ by tragic incident in Belleville

The County of Hastings said it is deeply saddened by a ‘tragic incident’ in Belleville and their thoughts are with the injured Belleville Police Service officer, congregants of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, their families, and everyone affected.

Police say a shooting outside the synagogue left two people, including a police officer, critically injured on Sunday night.

It happened around 7 p.m. on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

Hastings County said in a release that, “at times like these, we are reminded of the importance of standing together in support of one another.”

The county said it extends solidarity to Belleville’s Jewish community and to all those feeling the effects of the tragedy.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says a Belleville police officer was outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue when there was an “exchange of gunfire” with a man who was carrying a rifle.

The 29-year-old suspect and the officer sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.

The officer is in critical, but stable condition while the suspect is in life-threatening condition.

The county said they are grateful for the swift response of first responders, including Belleville Police Service, Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Services, and all emergency personnel who worked to protect and care for those involved.

The release adds that violence and acts that threaten the safety and security of any community have no place in Hastings County.

“We remain committed to fostering communities where all residents feel safe, respected, and free to gather, worship, and participate in community life without fear. Our community is strongest when we choose compassion, unity, and respect. We remain committed to fostering a safe and welcoming community for all.”

The SIU said four investigators and two forensic investigators are assigned to the case.

The SIU urges anyone with information, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at Special Investigations Unit — I’ve Witnessed an Incident.
