Hastings Highlands Public Library is encouraging the community to learn more about the dangers of radon.
Residents are being asked to test their homes and watch a free radon information session.
The session will be online, and in-person at the library, on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
Residents can pick up a radon test kit after the information session.
The session will cover health effects, why it’s a concern, and what Health Canada recommends for homeowners.
A media release from the library states that radon is a radioactive gas released by the breakdown of uranium in the soil. It is odourless, tasteless, and colourless, and can enter buildings and enclosed spaces undetected.
Long-term exposure can damage DNA in lung tissue and is leading to more than 3,000 Canadian deaths each year.
Hastings Highlands Public Library said they were keen to partner with Take Action on Radon after a staffer’s family member was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.
Amy Doole, a library clerk, said her mother’s doctor suggested testing the house for radon after a lung cancer diagnoses for the non-smoker.
The levels were extremely high.
Doole said they want to help prevent something similar from happening to other families
A limited number of free kits are available, and residents must sign up for the program.
Kits can also be picked up at the library Oct. 29 through Nov. 6.
