Central Hastings OPP continues to receive complaints of telephone tax scams.
In just one week, there have been 2 reports of these kinds of frauds.
Police say the fraudsters impersonate the Canada Revenue Agency, and try to get identification or ask for outstanding taxes be paid by a money service as a result of an audit.
The OPP says a Marmora resident was defrauded of 14 hundred dollars after being told his bank accounts would be frozen and that he would be arrest by CRA officers.
The OPP recommends:
- Do not take immediate action. Verify that what you are being told is the truth.
- Ask yourself why the CRA would be asking for personal information over the phone or e-mail that they likely already have on file for you as a taxpayer.
- Contact the CRA to confirm that you in fact owe back taxes, or are entitled to a refund.
