Bancroft Council considers 2.3 per cent property tax increase

We don’t know yet by how much, but property taxes in Bancroft are going up this year.

The town’s draft operating budget was presented to council today. The draft suggests a 2.3 per cent increase. What that means to a taxpayer’s wallet is not clear, but will be discussed at a public meeting next Tuesday.

Acting Mayor Paul Jenkins says the town has had to look for ways to become more efficient to keep the increase at 2.3 per cent.

The lion’s share of the extra tax will help pay for water, wastewater and the landfill, with the rest for policing and roads.

Taxpayers can find out more about the property tax increase at a public meeting next Tuesday at 7:00pm at Club 580. Council will hold a final vote in two weeks.
