Property owners react to Bancroft’s 2017 draft budget

Bancroft’s property owners have mixed feelings about a proposed increase to their taxes.

Bancroft’s 2017 draft budget was presented tonight at a public meeting. It suggests a property tax increase of just over two per cent. Interim Treasurer Arthur Smith says that adds up to around $55 a year for a property owner with a home assessed at $153,000, the median assessment in Bancroft.

Moose FM talked to some of the residents at the meeting to ask how they feel about the increase.

Arthur Smith says the largest expense included in the budget is almost $2-million for protective services, like police, fire services, and building and bylaw enforcement.

Council is expected to hold a final vote on if it will approve the budget at its next meeting on Tuesday.
