Social Justice Without Borders making final fundraising push to reach goals

Social Justice Without Borders has reached its $60,000 fundraising goal, but still needs more money to help our community.

The group is made up of North Hastings residents with a shared goal of raising $30,000 to bring a Syrian refugee family to the area, and another $30,000 for North Hastings Community Trust. Chair Judy Edgar says, thanks to donations, $37,000 has been raised to bring the Jarad family to the North Hastings area.

Edgar says the group’s focus has now shifted towards fundraising in support of Community Trust’s operations.

Edgar says the group will look to raise more funds for the Jarads in the future because $37,000 is not a lot for a family of five to live on.

The family had been expected to arrive this fall, but that timeline has been derailed due to complications acquiring Canadian visas. Edgar says it could take up to 18 months for the family to get visas in order to come to Canada, and is now unsure when they will get here. There is a home ready for them to stay in once they arrive.

If you want to contribute, donations are accepted at St. Paul’s United Church on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. A raffle will also be held until Labour Day to raise money. You can find out more on the group’s Facebook page.
