North Hastings residents weigh-in on potential ban on throwing food in the trash

North Hastings residents have mixed feelings about a potential ban on throwing your food waste into the garbage.

As part of the province’s ‘Strategy for a Waste-Free Ontario,’ it could introduce a possible food waste disposal ban by 2022, opting instead for green bin programs. Green bin programs exist in 37 municipalities in Ontario, including Peterborough and Belleville, but not in Bancroft.

Moose FM took to the streets to find out if North Hastings residents would agree with banning food waste from going in the trash.

The province says banning food waste from going in the trash could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over two megatonnes.

Public Works Manager Perry Kelly says Bancroft has been looking at different ways to reduce waste from the town’s landfill.
