Bancroft resident works to map turtle death hot spots on our roads

Local residents are being called on to help identify turtle hot spots in the Bancroft area, in order to have signs put up.

Kelly Wallace says she’s collecting data from the community about where there are a lot of turtle deaths on the road.

Wallace says this is important as seven of eight turtle species in Ontario are considered at risk. The Land Between and the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre have also declared a state of emergency because there were over 500 turtles hurt on Ontario’s roads by the end of June, along with many dead ones as well.

Wallace says her goal is to raise awareness about the issue, and hopefully start saving turtles so they’ll be around in the future. But, she says she needs you to help provide lots of information about where you see turtles in the area.

Wallace says she hopes to have hot spots mapped and signs put up by spring 2018. If you’d like to get involved, you can e-mail [email protected].
