Local health unit reminds you to check Halloween candy

Your child may be getting a lot of free candy tomorrow night, but it’s good to inspect it before letting them dig in.

That’s the message from Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health. Health Promoter Emily Bray says parents should check their kid’s candy before letting them eat anything.

The OPP is also encouraging you to check the candy your child receives, because anything unwrapped can be laced with drugs or other hazardous items.

Bray says Halloween can also be a scary time for kids with food allergies or sensitivities.

If you’re in doubt about anything your child receives, you are encouraged to throw it out.

Bray recommends having dinner with your kids before trick-or-treating so they’re not tempted to eat any candy before you inspect it. Parents are also reminded to keep candy that could be a potential choking hazard away from young children.
