Health Unit Offering Tips for a Safe Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and the Hastings Prince Edward Public Health unit is encouraging safer options for trick-or-treating this year.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza says while each family can make their own decisions on how to celebrate Halloween, he suggests skipping the door to door trick or treating this year. He says instead to try walking or driving around the neighbourhood to see the displays, or hunting for treats with household members. He also suggests doing something online this year, like a virtual costume contest, a pumpkin carving contest, or an online haunted house game.

But Oglaza says for those who do decide to trick or treat, wear a face covering that is not a costume mask and only trick or treat outside. He says for those handing out candy to not leave treats in a bowl, and use tools like tongs to hand out candy. He also warns trick-or-treaters to not linger or congregate at doorsteps and line up two meters apart. Oglaza says to have hand sanitizer on hand
