Fans pack Village Playhouse for gala, ahead of big fundraising year

Supporters of the Bancroft Village Playhouse ushered in a new era Saturday night.

The theatre was packed for its New Beginnings fundraising gala.

Guests who came to see renowned local jazz band Jane Bunnett and Maqueque made donations to Tweed & Company, the non-profit organization that runs the Playhouse.

Artistic Director Tim Porter says fans who missed the gala can still support the theater through the year.

“You can donate through Canada Helps. If you’re a business, you can sponsor and get some recognition as well in our Playbills and lobby displays,” he says. “Come see a show, that’s the biggest thing. Buy a ticket and see a show.  But also, get a 50-50 ticket while you’re here. All of those things support us, in a small way, in everything we’re doing. And there’s also volunteering, which is hugely important to us.”

This year’s fundraising efforts are important because Tweed & Company has several big expenses coming up to modernize the theatre. They include new lighting, new curtains and an elevator so the theatre meets accessibility standards.
