Change in school times approved for 2024

The start times of three North Hastings schools will change – but not until 2024.

The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board has announced that a proposal to change times for North Hastings High School, York River and Bird’s Creek elementary schools will go ahead. But the three schools will keep their current times for the rest of this school year and next.

The board says the delay will give more time for discussions on how to address new demands on before-and-after school care that may result from the time changes.

It will also allow time to discuss shared bus routes with the region’s lone Catholic school, Our Lady of Mercy.

But when the time changes come into effect in September 2024, North Hastings High School will start at 8:15 a.m., with York River starting at 8:25 a.m.; meaning an earlier start to the day for their students. Bird’s Creek’s bell time will be shifted ahead, to 9:30 a.m.

The time changes are being implemented to save bussing costs.
