Bancroft Mayor applauds support of Anti-Homophobia, Transphobia Day

Bancroft Mayor Paul Jenkins says he is pleased his council is supporting International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

The day is coming up on May 17.  A motion for the town to recognize the date passed unanimously at a recent council meeting. It also led to discussions on the need to re-paint the since-faded rainbow crosswalk that was placed on Station Street in 2019.

Jenkins says Bancroft will continue to explore ways to show it’s an inclusive community, such as hanging the rainbow flag at the town building in June. That month is known as Pride Month, a time to support the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.

“We’re happy to lend support to it, it’s a human rights issue. [So we’ll support it] just like we support other human rights endeavours,” Jenkins said. “I’m quite happy the council did pass it unanimously and there was not one negative comment said in the process.”

Jenkins added the town is “here to represent all people.”
