Rally racing seeing more women drivers: Tall Pines participant

Car racers are arriving in Bancroft for the Rally of the Tall Pines this weekend

One of the drivers, Margaret Sharron, represents a growing number of women who are taking up rally racing.

Sharon will hit the road, with co-driver Jennie Holden, in her blue Subaru, called the PrincesSTI.

Sharron said when she first got involved in rallies she was often the only woman. Now, she says that’s not always the case, as women drivers are becoming more common at events like Rally of the Tall Pines.

“It’s definitely male dominated, but I think we are making changes,” says Sharron, a Massachusetts native. “I do try to promote women in motorsports. Other women see us and they think, ‘well if they can do it, I can do it.”

Sharron, a frequent Tall Pines participant, says she loves coming to Bancroft because the winding, icy roads are challenging and allow her to do “jumps.”

She also says the fan turnout is great, as drivers enjoy competing in front the spectators.
