Warming Centre not expected to arrive on time

A mobile warming centre to keep the unhoused safe this winter won’t likely arrive in Bancroft by Friday, the originally planned date.

Hastings County’s Director of Community Services Deborah Headley says the County is still working with the supplier of the unit to figure out how it can be transported from Belleville to Bancroft, a complex task given that roads will need to be closed to accommodate its travel.

Headley says she’s aware that people concerned about Bancroft’s homeless population have been calling for a shelter for some time and County officials want it there as soon as possible.

“We have had lots of conversations and contact with the Town and the community around the urgency of that, knowing the temperatures are dropping in Bancroft,” she says. “We’re working as hard as we can, as fast as we can really wanting to get it up there as soon as possible.”

The shelter will have two bathrooms and four sleeping areas. Hastings County will provide staff who can support its operation. It’s slated to go to an area off Cleak Avenue.
