Universal Seal celebrates plant expansion

A North Hastings business that sells its products around the world says a recently completed building expansion puts it in a position to succeed even more.

Universal Seal held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to celebrate improvements to its McDonald Mine Road location, where the company manufactures polyurethane seals.

The improvements include a new conference space for visitors, a new management office wing and an improved facade. There’s also an improved cafeteria, for the staff of about 30.

Owner Kim Haythornthwaite says the improvements put the business in a better place to succeed in many areas, including retention of staff, which the company prides itself on.

“The average tenure of our staff is 17 years,” she says. “So, the people working at Universal Seal like working at Universal Seal. They live in the community; they hunt, they fish, they love the outdoors. They’re local and they stay with the company once they start.”

Haythornthwaite says Univeral Seal products are distributed to more than 20 countries worldwide, proving that an international business can thrive in a rural community.
