Local theatre takes top award from Bancroft Chamber of Commerce

“In recognition of your exceptional leadership, dedication to excellence, and lasting impact on our community.”

That is the etching on the Bancroft Chamber of Commerce President’s Award, given to Tweed and Co Theatre. Artistic and Co-Executive Director Tim Porter said there are a number of reasons why the non-profit organization took home the chamber’s top honour.

“I think we’re very lucky that the Playhouse has become a thriving arts and culture hub, but we are also a hub for the whole community. We host the 100-Plus Women Who Care meetings here. We have the animal shelter, and the bake sale every year. We have the Canadian Peace Museum. We have the high school.”

He added many local organizations use the building in some way above and beyond the concerts, events, musicals, comedy shows and youth programs at the venue.

“We’re very proud of everything we’ve been able to build here, and I think that’s resonating with the community and with the chamber,” he added.

Porter said the group’s goal is to provide much more than just entertainment.

“It’s being actually…kind of a grassroots organization that’s there to help when called upon.”

Tweed and Co allows other non-profits to use its building, something that pays dividends when it comes to getting people in the seats for performances.

“We know when people are here for a meeting, they see the posters on the walls and are intrigued about a show. Having the building active and alive is one of the reasons that we’re selling so many tickets. It’s to our benefit to donate the space and make use of the space as much as possible,” explained Porter.

The award isn’t the first the theatre has received from the chamber, as it brought home the community impact award last year. Porter said there aren’t many opportunities for small theatres to be recognized as compared to those in cities such as Stratford, home of the world-famous Festival Theatre.

“It’s great that the chamber is doing these awards and recognizing local businesses that otherwise would not have an opportunity to be recognized. We are very appreciative.”

Other award winners included the Pinestar Family Restaurant, which won the Community Contribution Award and B.K. Tree Service, winners of the Community Futures Award.
