Council explores opportunities to optimize the Dungannon Waste Site

Optimizing the Dungannon Waste Site was the topic of a report before Bancroft Town Council at their Tuesday afternoon meeting.

General Manager Andra Kauffeldt’s report said there is an ongoing operational deficit at the site, attributed to the loss of recycling revenue after the province legislated a shift to full producer responsibility.

She added the deficit was anticipated as part of this year’s budget.

A recommendation to optimize the site is installing scales to ensure all users are paying for the exact amount of waste they are dropping off, eliminating guesswork from town staff.

The report lays out a four-year timeline for implementing changes, including introducing a textile dropoff program this year, establishing a reuse centre next year, and continuing the foodcycler program, starting this year, until 2029.

Associated costs of $343,000 will come from landfill reserve funds.

Council voted to engage with Cambium Consulting and Engineering to start implementing the changes.

A landfill optimization study by Cambium was previously presented to council in May. The newest staff report expanded on some of their recommendations.
