KAPOA Poker Run to raise funds for baby isolette

An annual tradition on a local waterway returns next month. This year it will raise funds for some equipment that could save a baby’s life.

The Kamaniskeg Lake Property Owners Association (KAPOA) Poker Run, sponsored in part by Moose FM and other local businesess, takes place on Saturday, July 29.

The event brings boaters to the lake between Bancroft and Barry’s Bay, where they make five stops to pick up playing cards to form a poker hand.

Entrance fees are used to raise money. The Association’s Lynne MacLean explains that the event is raising funds for St. Francis Memorial Hospital to purchase a baby “isolette.”

“They don’t deliver babies at our hospital here in Barry’s Bay,” she says. “But this is for babies who are going to trauma or end up in the hospital for breathing problems. This isolette will also help if a baby needs to be transferred to a nearby hospital.”

Registration is now open for the event and those who sign up before Thursday are eligible for some “early bird” prizes. The association hopes to raise $27,000.

More details are on KAPOA’s Facebook page.
