New community garden is also a work of art

A community garden was unveiled at North Hastings Community Trust Wednesday.

It’s not just something that will grow produce to feed those who need help accessing food. It’s also a work of art.

The “edible art installation” was put together by Algonquin artist Sherry Crawford and local garden developer Fraser Young.

Crawford says the dirt placed along the garden forms the shape of a medicine wheel, with four quadrants.

“The medicine wheel is very important to Indigenous culture,” she says. “We live our lives based on those circle teachings. Each direction has a specific teaching and a specific meaning.”

The garden is located behind the Community Trust building at 19 Valleyview Dr. Trust staff say the garden is available to the whole community.
