Celebration of Dance gets kids moving at York River Public School

Hands were up. They were playing songs. And butterflies were, figuratively, flying away at York River Public School on Wednesday.

The Bancroft school hosted a Celebration of Dance for dozens of North Hastings students. Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA” was among the tunes that got students moving.

The Celebration is an annual tradition, hosted by Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board schools. By practicing dances, ahead of the event, students learn dance curriculum and the benefits of having an active lifestyle.

Grade 6 students Julianna Gallo, Clara Griffin and Emma Pilgrim all said they think dancing is an important subject for students. They say dancing helps kids learn about teamwork and collaboration.

“It’s a good way to show your emotions,” said Julianna.

“It’s great for exercising,” said Emma.

Also of note, with the Miley song on, students were nodding their heads, like yeah. And shaking their hips, like yeah.
