North Hastings Community Cupboard needs summer donations

As we enjoy the warm days of August, it’s important to remember that the local food bank’s need for donations never takes a vacation.

That message is from North Hastings Community Cupboard (NHCC) Director Monica Piercey. She says the food bank is currently struggling with supply of basic shelf items, like peanut butter, Kraft Dinner and canned meat.

She encourages cottagers to donate their leftover food when they pack up to leave the area.

“(Cottage visitors) if they’re packing up on a weekend, and we’re not open, you can drop your non-perishable donations in the grocery stores or the local IDA,” she says. “They all have donation bins and you can drop those non-perishabale donations in there.”

Community Cupboard also solicits donations as the Mineral Capital Concert series, which takes place Wednesday evenings through summer at Millennium Park.

The Cupboard got a boost recently. It received a $20,000 donation from The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints.

That donation, Piercey says, will provide some help for the next five or six months at not just NHCC, but also its partner food banks in Maynooth and Coe Hill.
