Bancroft’s Winter Maintenance may not be Contracted out This Season

A decision on who will do winter maintenance in Bancroft this year will be decided at Council.

Winter maintenance in the town has been done by contractors in the past. Public Works Manager Perry Kelly suggested at the Infrastructure Committee meeting today that winter maintenance being done in-house this season would be more cost efficient.

One of the biggest reasons it will be most cost efficient is because the town will use less salt. The town’s annual salt usage costs $75,000, which will be cut down as a result of the maintenance being down in-house. A salt storage facility will be brought in and put at the L’Amable Road Fire Hall. A $5,000 concrete slab will be put down for it.

Kelly says they’ll also lease a truck for $55,000 to $57,000 a year. He says it’s more cost efficient to do that because it will allow them to use the truck year-round, not just during the 150 day winter season.

The decision will be made at the next council meeting on Monday.
