Now is a great time to enjoy some of Hastings County’s recreational trails. If you’re enjoying the fall colours on one, you may also be pleased to hear that a deal has been made to keep an important trail in local control for years to come.

Hastings County has announced that it’s now the sole owner of the cherished Hastings Heritage Trail.

The 156-km trail was previously jointly owned by the county and province, but a deal to buy the province out has been finalized.

Warden Rick Phillips said, in a statement, that the county made the purchase because it recognized the trails contribute to residents’ health and well being. He also said the county wanted to ensure the trail would remain accessible for “locals, visitors, and future generations.”

The trail is enjoyed year-round by snowmobilers, dog-sledders, ATV riders and cyclists. It’s managed on behalf of the County by the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance.

The trail’s northern point is here in North Hastings County, along Lake St. Peter. It connects to the Glen Ross area of Quinte West.
